Polish discourses concerning the Spanish Civil War. Analysis of the Polish press 1936-2015

2018

The Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, as an ideologised and mythologised event, has been and is still used instrumentally within the Polish public discourse. The war was an important subject for the Polish press in the years 1936–1939. The Catholic, national-democratic, and conservative press supported General Franco’s rebellion. The governmental and pro-government press also supported the rebels. The Christian-democratic and peasants’ party press remained neutral. The social democratic, communist, and radical press backed the Spanish Republic — as did liberal-conservative organs such as Wiadomości Literackie. After the Second World War, the Polish communist media created the positive legend…

2019

In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse. The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy.

The rhetorical construction of Hillary Rodham Clinton as a presidential contender in 2016: A case study of hillaryclinton.com

2016

Peaceful Foreign Policy and Remembrance of War Effort : The Conceptualisation of Willingness to Defend in Finland and Its Connections to Previous Arm…

2022

In Finland, a conceptualization of willingness to defend has been a traditional part of the defence-related debates and the state has vested interests to maintain the high level of willingness. This paper examines the connections to the Second World War in political discourse related to willingness to defend. Based on the analysis of political and societal debates, I will demonstrate that the Second World War serves as an historical experience for the understanding of the concept by offering an idea of individual sacrifice relevant to the survival of the state, as a prime example. peerReviewed

Reading figurative images in the political discourse of the British Press

2017

The present work aims to study visual metaphors and multimodal metaphors in the political cartoons published in the British press during the Brexit campaign. The theoretical approach adopted draws upon the theories elaborated by Halliday (), Forceville (; ), Ruiz de Mendoza and Diez (), and Hart (), with the objective of identifying the three analytical steps that lead to the conceptual frames structuring the political event under investigation. Results show the extent to which the visual representation of the Brexit campaign proposes novel and original perspectives of interpretation, and further evidence of the relevance of metaphors and metonymies in the narration of e…

A Civilization of Death: Argumentative and Rhetorical Strategies in the Catholic Church's Position on Biotechnology

2017

Although political deliberation rarely proceeds fairly and effectively (Habermas 1984, 1989), the author of this paper assumes the fundamentally deliberative nature of the democratic public sphere, in which different religious institutions may take a stance and argue either for or against certain legal solutions. The study examines argumentation behind the Catholic Church’s negative stance on biotechnologies such as, for example, in vitro fertilization (IVF). Drawing on the theoretical and descriptive work on normative assumptions, knowledge bases and argumentative patterns involved in practical reasoning (Perelman, Olbrechts- Tyteca 1969; Walton 1990; Fairclough, Fairclough 2010, 2012), as…

2019

“Travailler plus pour gagner plus” (“Work more to earn more”) was a slogan of right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy during the 2007 French presidential election, which proposed exempting overtime working hours from taxation. In this article, I develop a cultural analysis of this political slogan. Its linguistic interest lies in its poetic and theatrical dimensions. The slogan is embedded in a rich cultural context: it refers to a doxa in right-wing discourse, according to which the “social model” should be replaced with a liberal model that also rescues the “value of work”. It responded to voter economic and social concerns, which were supported by the media. Through such strong slogans, Nic…
